Another popular question. The writing on Monkey's staff says 'Ruyi Jingo Bang', which means something along the lines of 'As-you-will Golden-bound Cudgel'.

Basically, it would grow or shrink at Monkey's will, hence the name. That and it was a cudgel... and golden bound, obviously. :-)
